Do you know the story of Freedmen's Town?
Not the one the news tells, the one that influences people to ignore and dismiss the people and their land. Not that one.
I want to know if you know the Folk Story?
The one about the freed women not wanting their white linen dresses to be soiled by the red mud from the Buffalo Bayou Swamp, so their husbands and brothers and fathers and uncles dug-up that same red mud and fired bricks. The men laid streets according to the Heavens so their women could walk dignified.
Do you know that story?
The one about Camp Logan where the HPD and the visiting Black Army Infantry had a shootout because those Black Soldiers were no one's "boys"? The story of how Houston used imminent domain to build City Hall and I-45 through the middle of Freedmen Town because the Free Folk were self-contained?
Do you know this story? This Houston History? Do you know there's more???
