I've started being more aware and in the moment during commutes. While Houston traffic is nobody's joke, it's also interesting who and what is traveling on the highways and byways alonside me. Dare I say inspiring?
It's easy to have tunnel vision in absence of an actual tunnel. Routine can become mundane. Ive found myself switching on Auto-Pilot; thinking about everything else b.u.t. staying present and in the moment. Dont be like me. Lol. Focus on traveling safely while also looking around to see the scenery and who is traveling on the roads with you. Much thought and work has been put into landscaping public places, even those places that appear to be unkept. Remember either the governments or someone, somewhere owns every piece of land our feet touch. Therefore their decision(s) to enhance and diminish the land is evident in the environmental designs we drive past everyday... I digress.
For now, Ask youself: What types of materials and products are being transported to keep sustaining (y)our lifestyle? What came here by ships? Trains? Automobiles? Airplanes? My spiritual teacher has a favorite saying, "The chicken doesnt just get on the table." ...And then, if feeling really contemplative while driving the 8 directions: How do we interact with those on the roads with us and the products/services they are transporting? What role have we played? (Consumer?) Are playing? (Producer?) Will play? (Investor?)
My commutes are typically longer because I live outside "the loops"...so I've got the time, lol. Ive experienced subways and travelling underground with limited visibility. Im thankful to have a vehicle and the opportunity to be Blessed by the colors of Nature. Now Im also thankful for Awareness. I can see the gas guzzlers of capitalism and their byproducts of pollution. I can also see enterprise and the bountyful manifestations of determined ideas. Selah.
And so as not to seem like a "Chakra Fairy" I must acknowledge that the highways require tolls and too often human life is the fee. Fairytales (Oh well, I guess I am a Chakra Fairy, lol.) call this Spirit a Troll... So, for protection and provision as needed I pay the Gatekeepers and Gaurdians of the Crossroads for safe passages. Selah.
So many perspectives, stories and motives. I started my meditations with the ritual sacrifice we were taught to accept as tradition, the ceremonial carving of a Turkey. That's magick folks! Whether you agree or nah... it is what it is. A ritual sacrifice as part of Ceremonial Magick... remember some of the schools still re-enact "The First Thanksgiving" and invite the community to witness... while those of us 'adulting' just watch the parades and football games... Rituals. 🤷🏾♀️Only thing is most of us participate unknowingly, sorta... we certainly arent gaining from the sacrifice, other than by major industry agreeing to stop production so we can have the day off to gather with family & friends... And yet, Thanksgiving is so much moor than "Giving Thanks"... that's a true Harvest Festival. Perhaps we should take back the holiday for our own intentions... Yes. Let's come back to this notion (soon)...
So, ritual sacrifice. Blood sacrifice... First it started with the sacrifice of human bodies in the name of land and mineral acquisitions for international trade. Then the Victory of the success of the colonies was marked & celebrated with an ongoing ritual named "Thanksgiving".. a day to feed the Spirits created by the sacrificial deaths of both the frozen, starving (cannibalized?) Pilgrims and the too many murdered First Nations tribes-people.. the Spirits that would allow for such warfare to continue for generations... Generations that would need to know and understand the original intention of the ritual and how to appease those Spirits that allowed for foreign Nations to live and prosper on Land not of their Origins.
We, those of us not directly participating in the ritual but whose consent is needed, would be taught a children's story of Squanto and Pilgims and long-tables and Cornacorpias... and Turkeys. We would be told to shed blood to this Spirit of Thanksgiving, this gluttonous Entity that once took the lives of every pilgrim that stepped on this continent but was somehow appeased... The series, American Gods illustrated this concept via the Vikings, now agreed to be the first N. Europeans to this continent. Turkeys, native to the Americas and of the same blood as this soil, would be sacrificed in mass every year during Harvest times... Until now we demand the carcass of these domesticated birds for our own rituals. Even when many of us may very well be cursing our bloodlines by participating.
Turkeys link America's new Spirit to the Old Country, as a variety of the bird was traded in the Ottoman Empire (The Levant) which blows my mind because it points to parts of history and politics I've never been taught.. The "They Came Before Columbus" part... I mean, if Turkeys are indigenous to the Americas then all varieties originally derived from an American species.. Right? Which means at some point, on an earlier date before Columbus and 'nem, the bird was shipped across the oceans so to be traded by Muslims in Asia... And turkeys dont fly soooooo... There's a missing timeline.
Yall, stay diligent. Keep questioning these rituals and the parts we play- intentionally and ignorantly ... And most importantly keep rejecting what doesnt resonate in your Spirit. Today's a full moon. Perform your own reversal rituals. This is the time of Harvest. The Thanksgiving spell & ritual were placed ontop of what was already established- pagan festivals. Remember "pagan" means folk. Dassit, lol. Focus on your Harvests and the Life growing around you. What are you reaping? Honor the First Nation in your lineage, or Give Honors to the First Nations that stewarded this Land so that eventually we would experience Her majesty. Bind mental laziness and complacency. Call on your Great Spirits and Goddesses. Always Love on your peoples. If they want to talk politics, engage with compassion. Most of our bloodlines were forced to forget our Names and Languages. Tonight, spend some time listening to the Wind. No Disney's Pochantas tho.
On the Presidential pardoning of a turkey started by President Truman:
“The pardon therefore performs the same basic function as the scapegoating sacrifice theorized by Girard in Violence and the Sacred, although instead of one special victim being scapegoated, every animal except for one special non-victim is scapegoated.”
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
