This 3-day weekend Ive been busily cleaning and sweeping out my home. Doors and windows open to allow the last of the Summer rainshowers to pass through. Incense burning to welcome the strong winds of Fall. She's on her way, the falling pine needles are proof. Ive even seen a few acorns on the ground. And of course Capitalism is preparing us for Halloween with bright oranges and browns, Pumpkin Spice beginning to fill the air. Lol, I gave into the pumpkin craze about 3 years ago. No sense in fighting it. America loves its pumpkin pie almost as much as apple pie. And guess what? Once I surrendered to the Spirit of Abundance that pumpkins represent I discovered that they are Sacred fruits to indigenous peoples and witches. Not sure when African-Americans traded pumpkins for sweet potatoes? Honestly I enjoy them both, especially roasted. And tis the Season! So this weekend as I swept my front doorway, removing dirt and leaves left from the winds of recent storms I thought about whats to come. With each brush of my broom a prayer. Then I poured warm water mixed with a solution of herbs and soap on the ground and again swept away the Season past. The Priest class has given us Holidays to align with the seasons. They call it what they want because they are ritual days for them. And thats fine. My sentiment is Thanks for the paid holiday. Now you do you while I do me...
So as I placed the broom in the corner next to my door I thought about the signifiance of the broom. Something as seemingly mundane as sweeping is actually the difference between sickness and health- it removes death and decay from our sacred spaces, mainly our homes. Despite many women's struggles to be valued as more than domestics, there is still immeasurable value in the protective power of the broom. Its an irreplacable tool for Earth witchin. Over the years Ive discovered the broom is also called a besom. Ive added a video to this post for more on this attribute. Brooms Up!
