Goddess Flora, Rome

At my local grocery store picking up produce for this weekend and remembered I needed fresh flowers. Of course I want to invite the Spirits of Imbolc and Brighid into my home so I can continue living in the wisdom and favor of this season. An efficient way to do this is to set-up an altar space. This space serves as a portal for the mind. It welcomes the desired energy and offers it a place to 'sit.' So, I wanted to create a basic altar for the Feast Days.

A basic altar has all 4 elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Depending on your intention other corresponding items are added. We will go more into creating alters in a future post. For this altar I knew I needed flowers; white flowers are associated with Bridghit. As I looked for white flowers I realized there weren't many to choose from other than Lillies and Carnations. I knew those weren't the ones I wanted as they corresponded with other Goddesses.... which isn't a major crime b.u.t. if I could get Her flowers then even better.

So I saw the white Gypsophilia flowers and was immediately intrigued. Their name grabbed my attention like, "Oh! You're here for the Gypsies? Well Hello there little pulchritudinous flowers!" (We've been watching Akeelah And The Bee. *wink wink* Good movie for the little girls, however you might wanna discuss the more mature parts.) The name spoke to me and their white color, so I went to an online correspondence guide to inquire about their nature. And lookie what it said:
"This annual flower is often used in water magick, probably because of its resemblance to sea foam, but as a Venus plant it is most often utilized in love and garden magick."

"Magic, Magic All Around/Top To Bottom and Up From The Ground/Open My Eyes So Magick Can Be Found."
PictureCorner Table Altar. Simple. Fire.
Y'all so while these flowers are common in floral arrangements and could be seen as just pretty filler flowers, that would be how the non-initiated mind sees them. However for those of us practicing occultists, spiritualists and pagans we see them as a way to bring the essence of that flower to whoever and whatever situation we are presenting them. So just as red roses are typically given at Valentine's Day to evoke the essence of sensuality and Lilies are typically shared with bereaving funeral goers to bring in the spirit of rebirth, so to are Gypsophila flowers shared to lend their essence of fire and rejuvenation. These common and esoteric meanings are brought into spells and ritual workings. Such as the above altar. Of course it can get much more complicated but the basics works for basic crafting.
